TAKE A WALK ON THE COSMOPOLITAN SIDE

Pune

  • Shop and taste your way through posh Koregaon Park
  • Browse art and handicrafts in a beautiful colonial-style villa
  • Make a progressive meal of Brazilian, Mediterranean, and Southeast

Koregaon Park is Pune’s answer to Mumbai’s famed Bandra—a cosmopolitan, pedestrian-friendly district lined with atmospheric restaurants and hip cafés. Fortunately for Conrad guests, all of Koregaon Park’s boutiques and restaurants are just a few minutes from the hotel. And while there are also the predictable tourist traps—don’t waste your time at the overrated German Bakery—there are plenty of worthy highlights throughout the area. Atelier Home, opened in 2008, is housed in a Spanish-style tiled-roof villa at the end of a long driveway, and specializes in housewares and furniture with a contemporary Indian aesthetic. While the custom-upholstered armchairs may be a bit bulky to transport home, the Mughal-inspired dinnerware might be a more portable option. Sanskriti Lifestyle is an art gallery and home store in a cluster of charming yellow-and-green colonial-style houses set around an idyllic garden; here you’ll find a mixture of vintage pieces as well as locally made crafts including mini auto-rickshaws, carved wooden coat hooks, and painted picture frames. Once you’ve finished splurging, it’s time to refuel. Grab a cappuccino on the tranquil patio of Café One O Eight, the kind of place where it’s easy to while away an afternoon with a laptop or a book. But don’t linger: You need to get going to have appetizers at Boteco, one of the city’s buzziest new restaurants, a Brazilian joint complete with a terrace covered in swirly black-and-white tiles à la Rio’s Copacabana beach. Try the pão de queijo (cheese bread) stuffed with sausage, as well as the escondidinho (dry-aged steak topped with mascarpone, parmesan, and pumpkin cream). Then hit Pune’s most popular pan-Asian restaurant, Malaka Spice, for your main course: garlicky tiger prawns and roti kanai. After dinner, retire to the patio of the Mediterranean-inspired Terttulia, which has excellent wines by the glass to go with your mango panna cotta. If it’s nice out, end your evening at Shisha Jazz Café—the vibe here is great any night of the week, but Thursdays are the best for live music.

Koregaon Park is right next to Conrad Pune, though you might want to get dropped off in a car, as the main roads there and back can be very busy. Once you’re there, the neighborhood is very conducive to walking.
